Hyde Park Nuanced Neutrals
Full Condo Renovation
project
project Type: Renovation
location: Hyde Park Tampa, FL
project scope: full service interior design
vendors: Studio Morr, Paul Michael Abstract Art Canvas, Coastal Breezz
collaborators: OnSite Construction, TMD Cabinetry, Gerardo Luna Photography
This small condo renovation is the definition of a labor of love. An almost two year project in the making, the homeowner and general contractor enlisted Slate Studios in the project after months of planning on their own, unable to make decisions, and not being sure how to transform the space to the level of design they knew was possible. When we got involved, the pieces of the puzzle started to come together and we created a holistic design for the space considering every detail from top to bottom. In the clients own words “The best thing we EVER did was to hire your company.”
overview

after
before
When the Ellards first began their renovation, they had a contractor and cabinetry team in place, but quickly found themselves overwhelmed and stuck. Without a designer to lead the process, decisions were stalled, the cabinetry team lacked direction, and the contractor was left chasing an ever-changing vision. There was no clear plan, no cohesive style, and no way to confidently move forward. Once Slate Studios stepped in, everything shifted. We brought a holistic vision, detailed design plans, and clarity to the process, aligning all vendors, making confident decisions, and turning a scattered renovation into a seamless, elevated design.
backstory

living room

detail
A bespoke bar in the living room serves as both a focal point and a functional feature, bringing personality and warmth to the space. The antiqued mirror backsplash reflects light beautifully, and literally SPARKLES in the evening. Ceiling-mounted brass shelving adds a touch of elegance. Custom lacquered fluted cabinetry in a serene blue color with built-in wine fridge complete the look.

Ellard couple
The Ellard’s, a fun-loving retired couple, originally purchased their condo in 2006. After spending much time living in other places, they knew this condo in the heart of Hyde Park would be their primary residence once they retired. Seeking out a space that mirrored their love of travel, entertaining, and relaxation, we drew inspiration from their passions for the design. Their appreciation for art and culture heavily influenced the design direction, aiming for a harmonious blend of practicality and sophistication. The biggest challenge we all had for the space was to maximize the potential of every single square inch of the 869 square feet condo.

When working with a neutral palette, texture becomes the key to visual interest. We layered sculptural fluted travertine tiles on the fireplace, a wrapped rope console table, and rattan lounge chair frames to create depth without overwhelming the space. Embroidered fabric on the window treatments and mesh insert panels on the cabinetry further enhance the tactile experience.

the direction
The design direction focused on creating a space that resonates with the clients' past experiences while providing a tranquil environment for their future. Custom cabinetry throughout was our way to incorporate thoughtful storage solutions to enhance functionality without cluttering the space with freestanding furnishings, making it feel smaller than it is. The neutral color palette, complemented by strategic color accents create a calming atmosphere aligning with the clients love for art and relaxation. No detail was an afterthought, every element you can interact with in the space from trim details on upholstery and window treatments, to the touch and feel of the hardware, and style of the doors and AC registers was thoughtfully selected to enhance the space.

Nuanced neutrals inspired Condo
project
Nuanced neutrals inspired the design. We wanted to create a palette of bright and welcoming neutrals, resort-inspired furnishings (inspired by the Ellard’s love of travel), sculptural shapes, and unexpected textures. Strategic pops of color were incorporated to provide visual interest without overwhelming the senses. A large source of inspiration for us was to feature the Ellard’s cherished art collection. The artwork was an opportunity to tell the clients story throughout the design, adding personal significance, and character.

DINING & KITCHEN

detail
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and in this petite space, our goal was to make it feel both expansive and welcoming. A built-in dining bench provides additional seating and storage without cluttering the layout. Board and batten detailing adds character, while wrapping cabinetry panels around both the kitchen and dining areas creates a seamless flow, visually tricking the eye into perceiving a larger space.

master bedroom

detail
To infuse the master bedroom with warmth and texture, we enveloped the walls, and even the wardrobe doors, in wallpaper, creating a cozy yet refined retreat. Built-in cabinetry maximizes storage without overwhelming the room, while a custom upholstered headboard frames the artwork and nightstands, subtly drawing the eye outward to make the space feel more expansive.
blending styles
At Slate Studios, we believe that blending styles isn’t just about compromise—it’s about creating a design that feels authentic, inviting, and effortlessly timeless. For this project, we embraced the challenge of balancing our client’s laid-back personality with their home’s more formal architectural style. The result? A space where timeless design and casual comfort coexist beautifully, proving that mixing styles is often the best way to achieve a truly timeless outcome.

Transitional meets
contemporary
We carefully balanced modern elements with the home’s ornate details, opting for clean-lined
furniture, subtle textures, and contemporary accents to soften the formality. Warm tones and
classic details ensured the space felt cohesive and grounded. The result? A home that feels approachable yet refined, perfect for both unwinding after a long day and entertaining.
the look

in conclusion
The transformation of the Ellard residence is a testament to the power of intentional design. What began as an overwhelming challenge for the homeowners became a beautifully curated space that reflects their lifestyle, passions, and love for travel. Through a meticulous approach, we maximized every square inch of their condo, seamlessly blending functionality with sophistication. The result is a refined yet inviting retreat where they can relax, entertain, and enjoy their well-earned retirement. This project was truly a labor of love, and seeing the Ellard’s' joy in their new home is the greatest reward.
